Are you interested in getting your hands dirty with sustainability? Do you like cooking and/or food service? Do you want to learn?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, come help out at TerraCafé! We work with local farms to bring fresh, sustainably sourced, and tasty food right to RPI!
What a pertinent question! Even we are trying to figure that one out. We are a fairly new endeavor, at least this rendition is, so the following is not exactly accurate yet.
But on paper, and hopefully at some point in the future, it will be structured like this:
- TerraCafé operates as a project of SSTF, meaning that while we host events which are unique to us, we still operate using SSTF's Budget, and under the leadership of the Eboard. That said, we do have our own leaders who practice some autonomy from the eboard, so they aren't solely focused on running TerraCafé. Those leaders are: Project Coordinator(s), Finance Coordinator(s), and Member Events Coordinator(s).
- The Project Coordinator(s) are responsible for making decisions regarding the daily operation of the project which most accurately reflect the stance of the SSTF e-board on the matter.
- The Finance Coordinator(s) are responsible for ensuring that TerraCafé operates at a profit and prepares a weekly report to the chair of the Student Sustainability Task Force on how TerraCafé will affect the SSTF operating budget.
- Member Events Coordinator(s) are responsible for planning cool events that lessen the burden on Service Members and make Casual Members possible. (What are the different types of members?)
Yes and no... The original club died in the wake of the pandemic. As it is quite difficult to cook when everyone must be 6 feet apart and all of your patrons are confined to the dorms.
But, in the rebound from the pandemic, we sought to restart this amazing project in an attempt to add the weight of action to our sustainability efforts. TerraCafé used to be Union Funded and Recognized on its own as a club. Now, it operates as a project run by the SSTF club as one of many (hopefully) sustainability projects lead in an effort to spread sustainability throughout our campus.
Admitedly, these are somewhat for roles in the discord so our notifications reach the right audience. But, there are some important distinctions.
-
Service Members
Service Members are self-designated volunteers of TerraCafé and recieve pings/notifications about upcoming events. As we progress, hopefully we will establish benefits for these volunteers.
-
Casual Members
Casual Members are expected to work at TerraCafé events, although help is always appreciated. Instead, these members will recieve pings and notifications about cool events which aren't open to the public. For instance, pot-luck movie nights which are expected to start sometime soon!
-
Patrons
Patrons–the last, but certainly not least–are those who support TerraCafé by buying our food! If you want a break from the dining halls, or are just hungry for farm fresh food, we're happy to have you! Patrons are essential to our continued existence and recieve pings and notifications related to upcoming events which are available to the public.
